The 3.5" portable HDD's by WD are apparently not.įrom what I found out the 2.5" WD Passports and the 2.5" ADATA portables, the drives are soldered into the enclosure. Then I was informed that the 2.5" Passport drive is physically soldered into the enclosure, which from my understanding what people are saying if it fails and you need the stuff off it, its either a PITA to recover because you need to de-solder the drive, which could cause even more damage to the HDD itself or cost you more if you take it somewhere. or I was, because I was going to get the 2TB 2.5" WD Passport from Costco a week or 2 ago when it was 89.99. Specifically we were talking about 2.5" portable HDD's. It's hard to say, you have to look it up. Is this the same for other brands? Are other external/portable drives recoverable somehow even if they fail? I'm wondering if I should stick with WD, or go with Seagate.
